Have you ever booked a theatre show because you read the reviews saying it was brilliant? “Not to be missed”. I have. Very recently infact, I went to the theatre expecting to enjoy a 5 star performance. And yet, even before the interval, I knew I wasn’t connecting with the show, as I had hoped.
I wasn’t disappointed by the talent on stage. Quite the opposite. There were actors, singers and dancers doing what they do best. There was colour, energy and plenty of talent, but for me, the story didn’t come together. And that’s the thing about theatre. You can read ten glowing reviews and still walk into a theatre and have a completely different experience.
But I had noticed other audience members leaving too. And, funnily enough, there was a man sitting behind me who had without realising found his own way of expressing his opinion – He was snoring!
By the interval, I had decided to just accept this performance was not for me, and I left – completely missing the second half, so I wouldn’t review the production, because I very much hope that it completely turned itself around to rapturous applause that I have witnessed on many occasions in the past.
But, my key takeaway from attending this performance was: That no matter whether the skies are grey, beige, blue or black, you will always find plenty of colour on stage, as I did, and I’m pleased I went.
So what if I didn’t love the show, we just have to keep finding what makes us want to return to theatre, and I’m already booked!
