97+ Stage Play, Hillsborough

“97+” written by former Edge Hill Student, Tom Cain

Hillsborough

The year was 1989.

This was the play that some of Culture Calendar Members went to see at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, this week.

Both characters in the play (Steve and John) are Liverpool fans, who were at the fateful Liverpool Football Match in 1989.

They relive their story, which needs no introduction. The Hillsborough Disaster was an event that touched so many people. Destroyed families. Destroyed friends. This story goes beyond the headlines and uncovers the human cost.

The aftermath. The anguish. The torture. Families ripped apart. Families that stayed together. A doctored statement. The fight for justice … and some very dark moments indeed.

97+ the stage play is a very powerful performance, moving many of the audience to tears.

Performed at The Liverpool Theatre Festival, 97+ is a must see when the opportunity comes around again.

(Please consider the age of any younger children going to see this performance).

Written and Directed by former Edge Hill Uni Student: Tom Cain, who says “Dedicated to the 97+ that died at Hillsborough, all those affected by the disaster, including my Grandad, a Hillsborough Survivor”.

“In Collaboration with the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance, without which this play would not have been possible”.

97+ was a very raw and touching performance. Would recommend, age dependent.
