But, who was Kitty Wilkinson?
Born Catharine Wilkinson in the late 1700s, Kitty was an Irish immigrant who made her mark on Liverpool through her determination and a overwhelming sense of community.
Despite the hardships on the 19th century, Kitty established successful washhouse business, providing a vital service for working class families, but her impact extended beyond laundry.
When the cholera epidemic ravaged the city, Kitty, understanding the connection between hygiene and disease, opened her washhouse to the community.
For just one penny a week, Kitty offered help in boiling and disinfecting clothes with chloride of lime, a practice she knew would help eradicate the deadly bacteria.
Kitty was such a campaigner for public health, she continued to shout for those less fortunate than herself. This led to the establishment of public baths and washhouses helping to ensure that proper hygiene became accessible for all.
